An examination of the factors which affect the rural-urban migration of Kikuyu and Abaluyia women has been undertaken in this dissertation. A basic premise of the study is that alterations in the social and economic positions of women will be reflected in increased rates of rural-urban migration. It is hypothesized that many of the factors which migration theorists have shown to affect male migration are also positively related to the migration propensities of women. It is also proposed that certain factors, notably husband's place of residence, husband's ownership of land in the rural area and children can have an important influence on women's mobility. Given women's low rates of participation in the formal employment sector, some doubt is cast on the significance of rural-urban wage differentials as motivations for these women's movement. Indeed, it appears that the search for employment has more relevance as an explanatory variable. However, the data support associated hypotheses that levels of educational attainment, age, marital status, husband's place of residence and ownership of land in the rural area, children, the presence of relatives and friends in the area of destination and prior knowledge about Nairobi are positively associated with women's propensities to enter the rural-urban migration stream. The analysis is based on data collected in Kangemi and Kariobangi Housing Estates and Ngecha Village. With the help of an interpreter and research assistants, interview schedules were administered to 117 Kikuyu and Abaluyia women who had migrated to Kenya since 1963 and to 28 Kikuyu women who live in Ngecha Village, which is located some 20 miles outside of Nairobi. |

The study examines the relationship between imperialism, colonialism and socio-economic change in Uganda during the period 1890-1930. During this period the most radical change instituted by British imperialism was the transformation of Uganda into a large-scale producer of cotton. The study therefore focuses on the development of the cotton industry as a case study to examine conflicting theories of the relationship between imperialism and development as presented by modernization and dependency analysts. Specifically the study attempts to investigate the relationship between the development of the cotton industry and the growth of entrepreneurial roles and the appropriation of the surplus. The results of the study indicate that by 1930 the Ugandan political economy had many characteristics of the classic dependency model. Within the country a deliberate policy of regional inequality was instituted in order to create an underpaid migrant labor force which could be derived from the peripheral areas. Therefore the development of the economy and social services tended to be concentrated in centers of commercial crop production and virtually prohibited in the outlying areas. Within East Africa Uganda was deliberately underdeveloped to allow Kenya to become the center of industrial development in the region. The administration of valuable land was transferred from Uganda to Kenya. A number of East African institutions were developed by the British through which capital was appropriated by the Kenyan government. At the same time proposals for industrial development within Uganda up until 1930 were generally denied. Capital flowed from Uganda to foreign capitalists in Kenya, India and Britain. Capital was also appropriated by the colonial governments of Uganda and Kenya which was generally invested in British securities. However the central contribution of the study is the illustration of the effects and methods of socio-economic change caused by British imperialism in Uganda through its focus on the cotton industry. The work shows how British imperialists, particularly through the British Cotton Growing Association, were able to control the development of the cotton industry in order that maximum profits could be extracted. The Association was able to determine from its metropolitan headquarters the type of seed planted, areas of production and the marketing of the crop within Uganda. The entrepreneurial roles created by the cotton industry were generally not made accessible to Africans. The alliance of British capitalists and the colonial government led to a policy of initially favoring the control of the commercial aspects of the industry by Europeans. Through various Cotton Rules the African was generally restricted from developing entrepreneurial skills either as an independent buyer or by operating inexpensive hand gins. The government also permitted price-fixing by groups of ginners which further limited the amount of capital available to Africans. On the other hand, foreign capitalists were able to accumulate great amounts of profit due to the cheap cost of cotton. Through price-fixing and rules restricting competitive buying, the African in Uganda was generally underpaid for his cotton. The cheap cost of cotton and its ready sale abroad led to the accumulation of large profits by the ginners and marketers of the crop. Revenue from cotton production therefore became the primary source of taxation and government income. Finally the study indicates that the modernization of Uganda was not an objective of colonial policy. The modernizing of Uganda was instituted to the degree that it was necessary to expedite the export of commercial crops. The development of social services such as health and education remained minimal by 1930. |

The steady increase in the confidence and bargaining skills of developing country governments has been accompanied by change in the kinds of political risks faced by foreign direct investors. Reports that governments are eschewing expropriations and nationalisations in favour of less emotive actions such as localisations have suggested that foreign direct investors may now have greater scope for influencing the amount of government intervention they experience. This study examines the intervention experiences of over 100 subsidiaries of multinational enterprises operating in Kenya, Indonesia, Zambia and Tanzania during the period 1970-1975. The intervention histories of these firms indicate that governments discriminate in their intervention behaviour. Furthermore, this discrimination takes place even where there exists non-discriminatory localisation legislation. An examination of the strategies and characteristics of these subsidiaries provided evidence to suggest that firms can influence the amount of intervention they experience. The most effective corporate characteristics were those which reduced the appeal of the firm to domestic groups likely to campaign for government intervention. These characteristics included the level of operational and managerial complexity in addition to other corporate defensive attributes, and the proportion of host nationals in managerial and supervisory positions. At the same time certain characteristics tended to induce politically-motivated intervention directly by the ruling party. Large employee size, involvement in a strategically-important sector, government sponsorship and, most importantly, a dogmatic adherence to a low 'political profile' were the hallmarks of such 'high intervention' subsidiaries. In addition, there was also some evidence to indicate that aspects of foreign direct investment which are frequently criticized by developing nation leaders do not really influence the intervention policies of governments. Several measures of the firm's economic contribution and adaptation to the local economy were found to be independent of intervention. Although government intervention broadly defined can be said to consist of both controls and incentives, the latter type was not examined by this study. Nevertheless, the results obtained may be used as a basis for the prediction of government behaviour towards specific foreign subsidiaries. *Publication No. 78-70,074 previously published in European edition Dissertation Abstracts International 39/04-C, Summer 1979. |
